Arctic Ocean, a bit east of north. (d2x_4153.jpg)

Taken on July 3rd 2006, note ice off in the distance and the melting remains of some of the ice along the shore.

Parking area (d2x_4171.jpg)

The white house on the left is the same white house that shows up in the Barrow Ice Webcam images. The large building directly behind the white house is part of the Top Of The World Hotel.

The playground (d2x_4172.jpg)

The white house is now on the right, and some of the playground is in this picture.

Sadie's Playground (d2x_4173.jpg)

More of the playground structures for kids to climb on are visible.

Sadie's Playground (d2x_4174.jpg)

That's the ASRC building in the background, up on the hill.

Sadie's Playground (d2x_4175.jpg)

The swings and some of the spring loaded rides. The building in the background here is the State Court House, which originally was the Alaska Commercial Store for many years.

On the left is one of the more fun slides. Behind it in the background is the Presbyterian Church.

This time the church is on the left, though the green houses also belong to the Presbyterian Church. The large blue building in the back is the North Slope Borough's Administration Building.

Buildings (d2x_4178.jpg)

In this picture the hospital quarters, the yellow buildings on the left, are starting to be seen.

The Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital is located on the other side of those buildings.

In the foreground the lower lagoon is just beginning to be seen. The old boats were placed there to be where tourists could see them. (There are at least a couple of other boats of similar vintage hidden around town that should also be moved to this location.)

Boats, Lagoon, and the oldest part of the Hospital complex (d2x_4181.jpg)

The Lagoon (d2x_4182.jpg)

In the distant background, with the red root, is the Fred Ipalook Elementary School

More Lagoon (d2x_4183.jpg)

[Back to Top of Page]

Dam (d2x_4184.jpg)

That is the dam which keeps the salt ocean water out of the Lower Lagoon. Barrow gets its fresh water supply from the water on other side of that dam. When the dam was originally installed in the 1970's the water required desalination, but in the time since then the salt has virtually all been leached out of the lagoon. The desalination plant was deactivated more than 15 years ago.

Browerville (d2x_4185.jpg)

Across the lagoon from the old village of Barrow, is Browerville. Once just a small place, mostly made up of the Cape Smythe Whaling Station and Brower's Cafe and Store, today most of Barrow actually lives in Browerville. That includes the Middle School, the Senior Center, the Heritage Center, the Tuzzy Consortium Library, the Alaska Commercial Store, the gas station, the NAPA parts store, and the US Post Office!

The US Post Office (d2x_4186.jpg)

That grey building with the green roof is the new US Post Office.

Fourth of July preparations (d2x_4187.jpg)

All the cars are parked in an area where various events are held. That's just folks getting set up for the 4th of July carnival. Other events helf there are Nalukataq celebrations for successful whaling crews and the New Year's fireworks display.

[Back to Top of Page]

The dike (d2x_4188.jpg)

The North Slope Borough Department of Municipal Services repeatedly (as often as it gets washed away, which is with a fair regularity) builds a dike along the ocean beach from them middle of downtown Barrow all the way to Point Barrow.
